چکیده
We report Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations of the Arches and Quintuplet clusters, two extraordinary young clusters near the Galactic Center. For the first time, we have identified main sequence stars in the Galactic Center with initial masses well below 10 M . We present the first determination of the initial mass function (IMF) for any population in the Galactic Center, finding an IMF slope which is significantly more positive (Γ ≈ −0.65) than the average for young clusters elsewhere in the Galaxy (Γ ≈ −1.4). The apparent turnoffs in the color-magnitude diagrams suggest cluster ages which are consistent with the ages implied by the mixture of spectral types in the clusters; we find τage ∼ 2±1 Myr for the Arches cluster, and τage ∼ 4±1 Myr for the Quintuplet. We estimate total cluster masses by adding the masses of observed stars down to the 50% completeness limit, and then extrapolating down to a lower mass cutoff of 1 M . Using this method, we find ∼>104 M for the total mass of the Arches cluster. Such a determination for the Quintuplet cluster is complicated by the double-valued mass-magnitude relationship for clusters with ages ∼> 3 Myr. We find a lower limit of 6300 M for the total cluster mass, and suggest a best Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. under NASA contract No. NAS5-26555. Photometry of the Arches Cluster near the Galactic Center
We present Near-IR photometry of the Arches cluster, a young and massive stellar cluster near the Galactic center. We have analyzed the high resolution (FWHM ∼ 0.2) H and K ′ band images in the Galactic Center Demonstration Science Data Set, which were obtained with the Gemini/Hokupa’s adaptive optics (AO) system. We present the color-magnitude diagram, the luminosity function and the initial m...

متن کاملAn Extended Star Formation History for the Galactic Center from Hubble Space Telescope/NICMOS Observations
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations as evidence that continuous star formation has created much of the central stellar cusp of the Galaxy. The data are the deepest ever obtained for a Galactic Center (GC) population, being >50% complete for mF205W< 19.3, or initial stellar masses &2 M⊙. We use Geneva and Padova stellar ...

We present high spatial resolution MERLIN 1.4GHz radio observations of two high redshift (z∼2) sources, RGJ123623 (HDF147) and RGJ123617 (HDF130), selected as the brightest radio sources from a sample of submillimetre-faint radio galaxies. They have starburst classifications from their rest-frame UV spectra. However, their radio morphologies are remarkably compact (<80mas and <65mas respectivel...
متن کاملNICMOS Coronagraphy: Recalibration and the NICMOS Legacy Archive PSF Library
NICMOS coronagraphy, with well-matched template Point Spread Function (PSF) subtraction, probes the closest environments of occulted targets with the highest imaging sensitivity in intrinsically high contrast fields at the smallest radial distances afforded, uniquely, by HST. NICMOS PSF-subtracted coronagraphy has been invoked in a wide variety of HST programs with science themes as divergent a...
